The decision to begin offering WTCG via satellite transmission to cable and satellite subscribers throughout the United States expanded the small station into the first nationally distributed "superstation." With the assignment of WTBS as the broadcast station's call letters in 1979, the national feed became known as SuperStation WTBS, and later SuperStation TBS, TBS Superstation, or simply TBS. The channel broadcast a variety of programming during this era, including films, syndicated series, and sports.

Description: Charley Magruder’s, the north Atlanta club owned by Butch Weaver from the early 1980s through its demise in 1996, was the spot that attracted a motley procession of familiar faces, from Tommy Shaw of Styx to Lemmy of Motorhead to Butch Patrick (aka Eddie Munster) to members of Metallica — all of whom would swing by. It was a launching pad for many successful bands. The now defunct WKLS 96 Rock would host events there. Description: The Big Chicken in Marietta. GA was not originally built for a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant. S.R. "Tubby" Davis built it for his eatery called Johnny Reb's Chick, Chuck 'N Shake in 1956 at 12 Cobb Parkway in Marietta. Highway 41 had just been built. He thought it was a great way to advertise. In 1966, Davis sold the restaurant to his brother, who turned it into a KFC franchise.

Description: Baby Doe’s Matchless Mine was a three-story restaurant and bar jutted out over I-285 above the Chattahoochee River in the 1980s.With its tin roof, water tower, and tipple cars, the ramshackle wooden structure looked like a theme-park attraction. The entrance resembled a mineshaft, which led either up to the dining room or down to the bar and dance floor. Decor was fringed Victorian lampshade–meets–rusting pickax. This location at Powers Ferry Road was actually part of a seven-city national chain named for Elizabeth “Baby Doe” Tabor, an infamous gold-digger (silver, to be accurate) who married a wealthy Colorado mining mogul twice her age in the late 19th century.

Description: The Ramblin' Raft Race was an annual Memorial Day weekend raft race on the Chattahoochee River in Atlanta that lasted from 1969 to 1980. At its peak, more than 300,000 rafters partook in the race. Amid increasing environmentalism, the race was cancelled. It lined a route which began at Morgan Falls Dam in Sandy Springs and ended at the shallow raft take-out a few hundred yards north of I-285 in Vinings.The race began in 1969 when several Delta Sigma Phi fraternity members at Georgia Tech, organized it as a social event. When the radio station WQXI became a sponsor and promoter, the race began to draw a larger crowd.
