This 1774 portrait has a young woman "taking coffee" - actually pouring it from cup to saucer - but ya know, it looks like tea in a teacup and that's good enough. "AND THAT'S THE TEA" caption added in bold pink letters makes it modern AF.

Unknown, Portrait of a Young Woman, late 18th century. Pastel, 40.6 x 32.4 cm. Saint Louis Art Museum, Saint Louis, USA. Little is known about the circumstances of this portrait. The sitter has previously been misidentified as two other women of color, the poet Phillis Wheatley and the heiress Dido Elizabeth Belle, though neither possibility is likely. The sitter’s headscarf, called a tignon, is not a style that was fashionable in Europe, but was worn in the Caribbean and parts of the colonized American mainland. After laws were introduced forcing women of color to cover their hair, many turned their tignons into marks of distinction, using elaborate knots and expensive materials, like this fine white silk. Marine phytoplankton bloom. Satellite image of a large green bloom of phytoplankton in the Gulf of Finland, Baltic Sea. Every summer, the nutrient-rich, cooler waters of the northern basins of the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans promote more growth among marine plants and phytoplankton than is found in tropical waters. This produces massive blooms of phytoplankton that spread across hundreds and sometimes thousands of kilometres. Blooms off Scandinavia in the summer of 2018 were particularly intense. Imaged by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on NASA's Landsat 8 satellite, on 18th July 2018.

There is a debate as to who painted this black gentleman, and who is the subject. Some believe it to be an author and some an abolitionist. I thought it was a striking portrait, a very nice piece of art! I placed him on a collage of antique papers I’ve collected from local antique shops.
