Description: As WWII drew to a close, the Canadian government adopted a policy to encourage the design and development of aircraft and engines in Canada. In 1945, Roy Dobson, head of A.V. Roe in Great Britain (which was part of the Hawker Siddeley Group), purchased the Victory Aircraft factory at Malton Airport in Ontario to establish A.V. Roe Canada Limited (Avro Canada). Avro’s Gas Turbine Division was spun off as its own company, Orenda Engines Limited, in 1956, and while Avro Canada folded in 1962, Orenda continued to produce jet engines until the mid-'70s.
Description: Avro Canada VZ-9 Avrocar - The Avro Canada VZ-9 Avrocar is a VTOL aircraft developed by Avro Canada as part of a secret U.S. military project carried out in the early years of the Cold War. The Avrocar intended to exploit the Coandă effect to provide lift and thrust from a single "turborotor" blowing exhaust out of the rim of the disk-shaped aircraft. In the air, it would have resembled a flying saucer.
Description: Avro Canada & Orenda Engines: Pioneers of Canadian Aerospace Innovation** After WWII, Canada promoted domestic aircraft and engine development. In 1945, Roy Dobson of A.V. Roe UK founded Avro Canada by acquiring Victory Aircraft in Ontario. Avro’s Gas Turbine Division became Orenda Engines in 1956. Though Avro Canada closed in 1962, Orenda continued producing jet engines into the 1970s, marking a key chapter in Canadian aerospace history.
