Tradition states that on July 8, 1776, the 'Liberty Bell' rang out from the tower of Independence Hall, summoning the citizens of Philadelphia to hear the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence by Colonel John Nixon. While that cannot verified as factual, the bell has long been associated with the Declaration of Independence and is regarded as a national icon. The bell carries an inscription from the Bible: "Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land Unto All the Inhabitants thereof."
