The area, just north of Bethany Beach, DE boasts campgrounds, a large marina, fishing and, of course, a well-maintained and guarded (in season) beach on the Atlantic Ocean.

#inktober day 11: snow. I thought about George Washington leading his troops across the Delaware through a snowstorm on Christmas night in 1776 after a rough fall full of losses and retreats. It made me think of a bald eagle riding out a winter storm on a branch.

A dawn kaleidoscope of color - pink, magenta, orange, yellow, red and blue - greets a new day at the Indian River Inlet Bridge, Delaware Seashore State Park near Bethany Beach, DE. Sometimes the dawn sky is the most colorful before the actual sunrise itself. This blaze of color (only slightly enhanced in editing) appeared about 10 minutes before the sun rose into a summer sky over the Atlantic Ocean along the coast.

The Indian River Bridge may have taken a long time to build but the engineers and construction workers got it right. In addition to being an integral part of Route 1 along the Delaware coast, it sure looks beautiful both day and night. Here is a surprising black and white rendition of of the lighted bridge from the south shore of the Indian River Inlet and to the west of the bridge. The official name is the Charles W. Cullen Bridge at the Indian River Inlet. There is a rich history of bridges over the Indian River Inlet - but that's a story for another time.

Penn's Landing in Philadelphia, PA is the home to two historic ships, the USS Olympia and The Moshulu. The USS Olympia was commissioned in 1895 and is the oldest steel American warship still on the water. The Moshulu was built in 1904 and is the longest windjammer still remaining. It is now a waterfront restaurant.

An abnormally high tide, a Spring Tide, creates a different view of a sunset at the Indian River Inlet of the Delaware Seashore State Park just north of Bethany Beach. The Charles W. Cullen Bridge over the inlet creates a unique silhouette against the orange/yellow/pink sky with the small orb of the setting sun almost sitting on the bridge itself.

Vintage illustration featuring Washington Crossing the Delaware, 1851 by Emanuel Leutze. It commemorates General George Washington's crossing of the icy Delaware River during the American Revolutionary War with military soldiers carrying the American Flag on the night of December 25th, 1776. That historical action was the first move in a surprise attack against the Hessian forces at Trenton, New Jersey in the Battle of Trenton. The flag of the United States of America at this time was not the current stars and stripes that is pictured, the historically accurate flag would have been the Grand Union Flag, officially hoisted by Washington himself on January 2, 1776.
