At the height of the muscle car era, Oldsmobile made a deal with Hurst that worked out really well for both companies. In order to create a “halo” car, the two companies collaborated to produce special, limited edition, high-performance Cutlasses. The program started in 1968 with a run of 515 cars, and continued off and on for a number of years, with the final run in 1984, but for many fans, the 1968, 1969, and 1972 versions were the best out of the nine years these cars were offered. The inspiration for the production cars was the Hurst Hairy Olds of 1966-67, drag cars that made a huge impact – twin-engine, four-wheel-drive monsters that were really fun to watch.

Irwindale Raceway, was located unironically in Irwindale, California, and opened up in 1965 just after the San Gabriel Drag Strip closed in 1963. Compared to the likes of Orange County and Lions, Irwindale wasn’t a fancy track by any means, but had its charms to say the least. Irwindale the place to be in Southern California on a Saturday night and thanks to the (then) remote location, they ran well into the small hours and the crowds were there for it! Like all too many drag strips, pressure by development ruined a good thing. In 1977, the City of Irwindale bought the property and essentially gave it away for development of a large brewery facility.

1968 was a very big year for the 442, starting with the fact that it was finally made into its very own model. From the time that the first 442 was released in 1964 up until 1967, it had been purely a performance package that could be added to the F-85 or Cutlass midsized Oldsmobile lines. With stellar sales and growing interest in the muscle car class as a while, Olds wisely decided to put the 442 out on its own. 442 models that came equipped with the W-30 Force-Air induction system took in cold air from around these lights. The W-30 package, which had been first introduced at the end of the 1966 model year, had unique internal engine modifications that included special heads and a high output cam.

The Ardun OHV conversion for the venerable Ford flathead was designed by Zora Arkus-Duntov and his brother Yuri as the “Ardun Engine Company of New York” in the late forties. By then the “old flatty” had become the engine of choice for the burgeoning hot rod craze and dry lake racers recognized the potential to extract some additional power from their flatheads. In 1951 a group of hot rodders took their black deuce to Bonneville setting a C/Street Roadster record of 162.61 Mph and the unofficial title of noisiest car on the salt. Later that year, an engine dyno test recorded 303 Hp @ 5250 rpm with 25% fuel which were big numbers for the day.

THE Widebody

T-Shirt iron-ons from the 70s and 80s have a truly unique style that never really caught on in any other medium, but their fragile nature makes them tough to find decades later. This design celebrates these great examples of period t-shirt art by recreating the style with plenty of vintage wear and tear to make it look the part.

For the 1973 season, BMW to built a special, lighter version of the E9 known as the 3.0 CSL Coupé, with panelled aluminium bodywork. The use of injection, and a small increase in capacity, took basic engine-power to 206bhp. The highly prepared Group 2 racing versions, with elaborate aerodynamic fittings, earned countless victories, including two wins at the Le Mans 24 Hours - in the Special Tourism class in 1973 and 1974.
