The 1st Cavalry Division ("First Team") is a combined arms division and is one of the most decorated combat divisions of the United States Army, as well as the other four branches of the U.S. military. It is based at Fort Hood, Texas. It was formed in 1921 and served during World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Cat Gulf War, with the Stabilization Force in Bosnia-Herzegovina, in the Iraq War, and in the War in Afghanistan (2001–present).

From 1953 to 1971, the 7th Infantry Division defended the Korean Demilitarized Zone. Its main garrison was Camp Casey, South Korea. Troop H, 17th Cavalry was initially the ground reconnaissance element of the 198th Infantry Brigade (Light), arriving in Da Nang aboard Military Sea Transports on 22 October 1967 from Fort Hood, TX, where it has been formed from units of the 1st and 2d Armored Divisions. Troop H departed Vietnam on 1 October 1971. The 56th Artillery Command is a two-star command of the United States Army pending reactivation in October of 2021. The unit was originally formed in 1942 with the last period of active service being 1963 through 1991 utilizing the nuclear Pershing Missle System. MG Stephen J. Maranian will head the Army’s 56th Artillery Command from its future headquarters in Mainz-Kastel, near the Army's existing four-star headquarters in Wiesbaden.
