The locally named Chemical Beach at Seaham Harbour on the County Durham Coast of northern England is named after the old chemical works that was located close to the cliffs in the 1800's. The waste from the works ran in pipes to the sea where is was disgorged. Over the years, much work has been carried out to create clean beaches. However, signs of the old damage persist. The area can produce almost alien looking images at both sunrise and sunset.

The sun setting over the remains of Brighton's iconic West Pier. Built in Victorian times to allow the populace to enjoy bracing fresh sea air by walking over the sea, it has suffered gradual destruction since the mid 1900s and was finally closed to the public in 1975. In 2003 a fire destroyed the main structure, the elements continuing the work leaving these skeletal remains!

This image is another of the lighthouse at Cape Spear. Sitting there up on the cliff, looking out over the Atlantic, it's perhaps the first sign of life you would see after crossing the Atlantic. The lighthouse stands over the most easterly point in North America. I like the curve that crosses from the sea up and over the cliff to the lighthouse—it bisects the image almost evenly—dark versus light. A kind of a ying and a yang. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the image.
