It depicts Ophelia, a character in William Shakespeare's play Hamlet, singing before drowning in a river in Denmark. Ofelia has been making wildflower wreaths. She climbs a willow tree overhanging a stream to hang some of its branches, and a branch breaks under her. She stands in the water singing songs, as if unaware of her danger ("incapable of her own anguish"). Her clothes, trapping the air, allowed her to remain temporarily afloat ("Her clothes spread out, / And, like a siren, for a while they sustained her.") "But eventually, her clothes, heavy with water, pulled the poor thing from her melodious 'down' to her muddy death". Ophelia's death has been praised as one of the most poetically written death scenes in literature.

*Saint Gertrude of Nivelles*, the patron saint of cats, travelers, gardeners, and against rats and mental illness. She was born around 621 and founded the monastery of Nivelles together with her mother Itta. Gertrude's father, Pippin of Landen (Pippin the Elder), was a leader of the nobility in east Frankia. Her mother Itta or Ida was from Gascony, and was likely acquainted with Saint Amand. King Dagobert I asked Gertrude to marry the son of a duke...I think he wasn't prepared for her answer. Gertrude’s biographer describes how, “she lost her temper and flatly rejected him with an oath, saying that she would have neither him nor any earthly spouse but Christ the Lord.”
