A digital design of the most famous Viking battle formation, the shield wall, performed by the shields of the Lothbrook family (Ragnar, Lagertha and Bjorn).

The most famous of them being Lagertha. According to the legend, Lagertha was a Norwegian Viking shieldmaiden who married the famous Norse chieftain Ragnar Lothbrok. Vegvisir translates into “That Which Shows the Way” in Icelandic. In the Huld Manuscript, it says this about the Vegvisir: “If this sign is carried, one will never lose one’s way in storms or bad weather, even when the way is not known.”

The Valkyries, whose name means “chooser of the slain” are prominent figures in Old Norse mythology. They are female entities who preside over battles selecting those who died fighting valiantly to spend their afterlife in the halls of Valhalla where the Valkyries serve them mead as they plan for the events of Ragnarök. My artwork depicts a Valkyrie carrying a slain warrior to the halls of Valhalla behind her.

Ragnar "Lothbrok" Sigurdsson (Old Norse: Ragnarr Loðbrók, Ragnar means "keeper of the fort" and Lothbrok means "shaggy breeches") is a Viking farmer and warrior who yearns to raid the rumored riches of undiscovered England. His first wife is Lagertha, and they have two children named Gyda and Bjorn. His second wife is Aslaug, and they have four sons named Ubbe, Hvitserk, Sigurd, and Ivar. Ragnar is the younger brother of Rollo. He becomes King of Kattegat.

A shield-maiden (Old Norse: skjaldmær), in Scandinavian folklore and mythology was a female warrior. They are often mentioned in sagas such as Hervarar saga ok Heiðreks and in Gesta Danorum. For your best Viking Workout!

Kattegat is the seat of Earl Haraldson, and the center of his powers. Events such as The Thing and other meetings among the Vikings are held in Kattegat. It's also the center of commerce for the area, especially considering its location in a fjord and its access to sea travel. Farmers, such as Ragnar, and producers of various goods, rely on Kattegat as the primary market where they can sell their goods. Later, after Haraldson is slain in single combat by Ragnar, the Lothbrok family abandons its farm, which had been put to the torch by the Earl's men, and relocates to Kattegat, where Ragnar rules as the new Earl.
