Turtle’s Records and Tapes was a Southern USA retail chain, based in Atlanta, that specialized in selling cassettes, records, and concert tickets; in the latter years of the chain’s existence, it also rented movies in VHS format. Turtle’s was recognized for its trademark logo, an upright standing turtle with its neck twisted around in several coils as he attempts to look backward. It was known for its deep selection and one of the most varied video rental offerings in its markets before the arrival of the big chains such as Blockbuster Inc. KLOL FM was a rock station in Houston, Texas that was on the air from 1970 until 2004. The last song broadcast by the legendary station was also the first it ever played, "I'm Free." Like many early rock stations, KLOL began as a free form/progressive outlet, then morphed over the years to AOR and then classic rock. KLOL now airs a Spanish Pop format as Mega 101.

On March 17, 1981, First Media completed their pourchase of KBLE-FM, and flipped it to an automated Top 40/CHR format as "The Northwest's New 93 FM." On July 8, 1981, KBLE officially launched with live on-air staff. On April 2, 1982, the call letters were changed to KUBE, and the station became known as "KUBE 93 FM". Shortly after the switch to Top 40/CHR, KUBE shot up to the top 5 in the Seattle radio market ratings (occasionally reaching #1 in some books and target demographics) and would later become the dominant CHR station in the Seattle metropolitan area. KUBE primarily competed against two other Top 40/CHR stations in the Seattle metropolitan area, creating an intense rivalry between the three stations throughout the '80s.

The station first signed on in March 1967 as WREC-FM, sister to WREC 600 AM. In December 1975, the station went to an automated Country music format with the call letters WZXR. On September 25, 1977, the station switched to AOR. Except for a brief flirtation with Top 40 in 1985 and 1986, the station has played some form of rock ever since. Known as "Rock 103," WEGR has been consistently programmed with a classic rock format for more than 40 years. Its mascot is a walrus, which has seen numerous incarnations. The "rock" in this logo is the same as WKLS Atlanta's 96 Rock logo.

WASH evolved from experimental FM station, W3XL, which was first licensed in September 1945 in Kansas City, and later moved to Washington, D.C. WASH debuted as Washington's second commercial FM station on December 17, 1946, initially relaying Overseas Service programming and broadcasting thrice-daily time signals while building their studio. In 1968, Metromedia acquired the station, trading news for an adult contemporary format. In the early '80s, the station attempted to do a Top 40/CHR format, publicized with a rather strange "WASH with the Stars" advertising campaign. After a few years with little success against D.C.'s established Top 40 stations, WASH returned to a full service adult contemporary format.

For nearly two decades in Dallas, a strange, winged elephant creature could be found on car windows, billboards, and the t-shirts of self-proclaimed “Zoo Freaks.” The creature was part of the logo for Dallas radio station KZEW, a station that provided the rock ’n’ roll soundtrack for a generation of locals in the post-Woodstock '70s. KZEW was a pioneer on the FM dial when there were few rockin' FM stations and those that did exist played out tranquilizing music for doctors’ offices. Life at KZEW was a zoo in itself. It was kind of like the Smothers Brothers on LSD had taken over a major broadcast facility, right in the heart of the Bible Belt. The jocks let loose with a diverse blend of rock music and didn't make use of a rigid playlist.

KMET was a Los Angeles FM radio station owned by Metromedia (hence the "MET" in its call sign) that broadcast at 94.7 MHz beginning on May 2, 1966. It signed off permanently on February 14, 1987 after a 21-year run on air. The station, nicknamed "The Mighty Met" (among other nicknames), was a pioneering station of the "underground" progressive rock format.
