The Spirit of the Staithes is a public artwork on the quayside at the Port of Blyth in Northumberland on the North East coast of England. The artwork commemorates the old wooden staithes which stood on the spot when the port was the biggest exporter of coal in the world and is pictured here just after sunrise on a calm November morning with the rising sun bursting over the pier and the base of the sculpture.

St Mary's Lighthouse and island lie north of the River Tyne and Whitley Bay on the North Sea coast of England. The lighthouse is no longer in operation and is now a museum and tourist attraction which is only accessible at low tide when the causeway is not under water. The image was taken on a bright May morning with only a breath of wind and a cloudy sky.

The image was taken on a warm August morning shortly after sunrise with a lovely soft light and interesting cloud formations.

The beach which sits, south of Seaham, is named after the Seaham Chemical Works which occupied the immediate cliff top for a short time. It was established in the 1860s, by the 1890s it had gone. But Chemical Beach continued to be abused. The sand was extensively removed by the Seaham and Londonderry Bottle Works to make glass and coal waste from the Dawdon Pit was dumped into the sea. The beach and cliff top have been cleaned up. Natural is recovering. The magnesian limestone provides a rare habitat for flora and butterflies and is under the protection of the National Trust.

Probably the most photographed castle in Northern England - But with views and morning skies like this, who can't resist the wonderful Bamburgh Castle. Standing proud and defiant on the Northumbrian coastline, Bamburgh remains a favourite tourist spot and rarely fails to have a photographer taking an image.

A 'sewer gas destructor lamp' near the harbour at Seaton Sluice in Northumberland on the North East coast of England. These lamps were invested in the 1890s and are Grade II listed structures. They were erected in Victorian times to take away the methane gas build-up in underground sewers. Useful and beautiful at the same time!

The image was taken on a very cold December morning shortly after sunrise with a lovely soft light and was converted to black and white to emphasise the drama of the scene. The image was taken almost at high tide.

Quiet start to a lovely December morning at Tynemouth Long Sands on the North East Coast of England. The sun is just about to rise above the horizon and has cast a lovely colour onto the sky which in turn is reflected in the wet sand giving a minimalist feel to the image. Tynemouth pier and lighthouse together with the ruins of Tynemouth Priory can be spotted on the horizon.

Cullercoats is a sandy bay enclosed by small piers and as such is an excellent environment for family use. The south of the bay is a launching area for local fishing boats and leisure craft. The beach is backed by cliffs, which contain interesting geological features. A marine laboratory, working Victorian Lifeboat Station and Fisherman's Watch House. All of these facilities/features are seen in the work of the famous American artist Winslow Homer.
