A row of old cottages in the village of Tidmarsh, West Berkshire following a flurry of snow. Tidmarsh lies on the main road from Theale to Pangbourne and then on to Oxford - the A340. Opposite here is a C13th half timbered and thatched pub. The river Pang flows through the outskirts of the village and straddling this is the old mill, once the home of Lytton Strachey and Dora Carrington of the so-called Bloomsbury Set. The church of St Laurence in Tidmarsh, Berkshire. The church dates from the 12th century and is notable for its fine carved Norman doorway and unusual 12th century polygonal apse. Inside, medieval wall paintings survive in two of the nave's window recesses. The church is very near the River Pang which flows through the village on its way to join the Thames at Pangbourne.

Ahead is The Street, the main road through the village , now the A340 but once, apparently the Roman road which joined Silchester (Calleve Atrebatum) in Hampshire with Dorchester-on-Thames in Oxfordshire. Along this road is a row of old cottages, the Georgian village pump, the round toll house and the old school.

This Grade 1 listed C12th church with its unusual wooden bell cote has a superbly decorated Norman doorway, a Norman font and C13th lancet windows. The box pews lead to an unusual polygonal apse. There are also traces of C13th wall paintings in two window recesses. Just beyond the church the River Pang flows on its way to join the Thames at Pangbourne.

A walk along the footpath which runs through the meadows between the villages of Sulham and Tidmarsh in West Berkshire on a sunny January day. The view here is just below historic Tidmarsh Mill, the home of Lytton Strachey and Dora Carrington between 1917 and 1924. Here the artists and writers of the Bloomsbury set would meet. The River Pang, one of England's ecologically valued chalk streams, starts its life on the Berkshire Downs near Compton (depending on rainfall!) and supports a wide variety of wildlife.

Beyond this the later houses have fine, tall chimneys apparently in the style of Lutyens. The road itself, the A340 is thought to be an old Roman road leading from Silchester to Dorchester-on-Thames, both important Roman towns. The village mill was once lived in by Lytton Strachey and the Bloomsbury Set.

The doorway and bell cote of the parish church of St Laurence at Tidmarsh in West Berkshire. The church building dates from the 12th century although there was apparently an earlier building on this site. The round-arched and beautifully carved Norman doorway leads you into a small nave paved with ancient floor tiles. Two of the nave windows have the remains of medieval wall paintings and on the chancel floor are memorial brasses. The bell cote is supported by carved oak timbers.

These villages are very near the larger community of Pangbourne. It's a fine February day although very cold and quite muddy underfoot!

The river starts its life on the Berkshire (North Wessex) Downs near the village of Compton and winds its way through West Berkshire to finally meet the River Thames at Pangbourne.
