Looking towards the Grand Canal and Santa Maria Della Cathedral in the early morning in Venice, Italy. A bit of history on the cathedral .... In 1630, Venice experienced an unusually devastating outbreak of the plague. As a votive offering for the city's deliverance from the pestilence, the Republic of Venice vowed to build and dedicate a church to Our Lady of Health (or of Deliverance, Italian: Salute). The church was designed in the then fashionable baroque style by Baldassare Longhena, who studied under the architect Vincenzo Scamozzi. Construction began in 1631. Most of the objects of art housed in the church bear references to the Black Death.

Burano is a lovely little island close to Venice and it is famous for it's painted houses. Legend has it that the fishermens wives used to paint the outsides of their houses while their men were at sea, so that they would remember them and find their way home safely. It used to be a fishing and lace making island, but now it is more of a tourist attraction. As you can see, I went there on a rainy day, but it still had a lot of charm. Edited in PhotoshopCC and Topaz.

The sun is gradually setting over Venice. Here we see on the left the island of San Giorgio Maggiore with the campanile of its magnificent Palladian church which dates from 1566 and the subject for many artists including Monet. It is now the HQ of the Cini Foundation Arts Centre with a noted library. Further on we can see the distinctive domes of the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute. Here the Giudecca Canal, the Grand Canal and the Canale de San Marco meet in the Venetian Lagoon.

The imposing Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute in Venice. This beautiful building stands on the Punta della Dogana between the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal and is obliquely opposite St Mark's Square. This view is from the Grand Canal. It was consecrated in 1681 and was built as an offering for the deliverance of Venice from a plague that ravished the city in 1630. Its domes became an emblem of the city andit has been painted by artists such as Canaletto and Turner.

Here is one of the great monuments of Venetian baroque, the beautiful and imposing basilica of Santa Maria della Salute. Consecrated in 1687, the church that "guards" the entrance to the Grand Canal was built as a form of thanksgiving for those who survived a plague that decimated about 30% of the population between 1630 and 1631. Built by Baldassare Longhena, the basilica has an octagonal shape, domes that can be seen from various parts of the city and a facade filled with statues of angels and saints. The interior of the temple also leaves nothing to be desired in terms of beauty and magnificence, the main altar, for example, is entirely in Baroque style and was designed by the same creator of the basilica.
