The River Thames as it flows past the market town of Wallingford in Oxfordshire, England. This view is from the old bridge that links the town with the village of Crowmarsh Gifford. Wallingford is almost exactly half way between Reading and Oxford and the river here would once have been busy with commercial traffic travelling to and from from London to the east and, after 1789, from the north of England via the newly completed Oxford canal. The river is still busy but now with pleasure craft.

An Autumn scene on the Thames at Sandford Lock just south of Oxford. Taken late in the day during early November, the low sun intensifies the autumnal colours. Sandford lock is the deepest on the Thames and is also one of the oldest.

This is at Braunston, lock no.3 on the Grand union canal, Northamptonshire, UK, with a lovely reflection of the house, pub the admiral nelson and narrow boat alongside the canal. Canon 600D HDR 3 shot image.

A footbridge over the River Pang in the watermeadows adjacent to the village of Pangbourne in Berkshire. The footpath leads from Pangbourne and follws the river, crossing here, to emerge at Tidmarsh a mile or so away. The Pang is a chalk stream which rises in Compton on the Berkshire Downs (although this is dependant on rainfall) and flows through West Berkshire to join the Thames at Pangbourne. It has a wide variety of wildlife, supported by a large nature reserve at Tidmarsh.

The Brecon and Monmouthshire Canal as it makes its way to the town of Brecon. Here the waterway reaches its northern limit after winding through the Brecon Beacons, The canal was constructed to link Brecon with the docks at Newport, the narrow boats carrying coal, iron and limestone. A system of tramways linked the canal to the mines and quarries. It is currently navigable between Brecon and Pontymoile, with plans in place to extend this to Newport. This is a digital art image.

A narrowboat moored at Talybont-on-Usk on the Monmouth and Brecon Canal (known as 'The Mon and Brec') on a sunny summer afternoon. This peaceful canal winds its way from Brecon in Powis, through the Brecon Beacons and Monmouthshire to the docks at Newport, once carrying coal, iron and limestone. Now it's navigable only between Brecon and Pontnewydd but further sectioins are being restored with the aim of opening the entire length for traffic. This image is produced as digital art.

Narrowboats moored along the Kennet and Avon Canal near Woolhampton in West Berkshire. This was captured on a beautifully sunny - if cold - day in mid-January. This section of the waterway is properly called the Kennet Navigation as it is partly river which has been made navigable. The Kennet and Avon waterway, 87 miles long, was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to link the Thames and Avon rivers, providing a smooth transport link between Bristol and London via Reading.

A scene on the River Nile as it flows through Egypt between Aswan and Luxor. Here there are islands and verdant riverbanks lined with palm trees. The area either side of the river is rich farmland but just behind is arid desert! In this scene we can also see fishermen in their small boats reaping their own harvest. The image is finished with a chalk pastel effect developed from my original photograph.

Looking across the footbridge spanning an arm of the River Thames at Little Wittenham, Oxfordshire. An attractive, lattice-sided bridge, it connects the village of Little Wittenham with the Thames Path leading just upstream to Day's Lock. Until recently the bridge was the setting for the annual Poohsticks Championships!

Looking upstream towards Day's Lock on the River Thames at Little Wittenham. Here the rive flows by the village of Dorchester on Thames, once an important Roman settlement, now famous for its abbey - and being the frequent setting for the TV series 'Midsomer Murders'! Further above the lock is the town of Abingdon whilst downstream the river flows past the hills known as the Wittenham Clumps. In summer the river is busy with boats of all sorts but this image shows a quiet afternoon in spring.

Looking across the swing bridge at Sulhamstea in Berkshire, England, crossing the Kennet and Avon Canal. This is one of the farm bridges allowing cattle to cross the canal to the fields on the opposite bank. This image was captured on a sunny September evening, the low sun accentuating the colours.

The lift bridge over the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal at Talybont on Usk, South Wales. On the navigable stretch of the waterway between Brecon and Pontnewydd, this bridge is electrically operated by boaters. Here the canal is on an embankment above the village street, The Monmouth and Brecon Canal dates from 1799 and was part of a system combined with tramways to transport coal and limestone to Newport.

A narrowboat moored next to a restaurant, once a watermill, on the banks of the Thames at Maidenhead in Berkshire. Just behind us the river passes through Boulters Lock, the subject of paintings especially in Victorian and Edwardian times. This is Ray Mill Island and in the background a new footbridge leads over the river to Taplow. A lovely place to stop for refreshment on your journey along this beautiful river.

Other than being somewhere along the St. Lawrence in the province of Quebec, Canada, I have no idea of the actual location of this little marina. We drove around the perimeter of the Gaspe Peninsula, and crossed the St. Lawrence by ferry before proceeding to Quebec City. So, it could be anywhere along there, near a small town on the coast.

The River Thames as it flows through the market town of Abingdon in Oxfordshire. In the background is the spire of St Helen's church which dates form the early 12th century, In 2005 it acquired a new ring of 10 bells cast by the famous Whitechapel Bell Foundry in London. Although now in Oxfordshire, Abingdon was, until 1867, the county town of Berkshire before that status was transferred to Reading. In Medieval times it was an important wool and woollen cloth producing town.

The Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal as it passes through the village of Talybont on Usk in Powis, South Wales. At present the section from the canal basin at Brecon to Pontnewydd is the only navigable part but plans are in place to eventually extend this to Newport.

It has a rise and fall of 6ft 4 ins (1.93 m). The canal was made to link the two rivers, Kennet in the east and Avon in the west to enable goods to be carried from London to Bristol. It fell into disuse due to the Great Western Railway but was restored in the late 1900s and is now a busy leisure waterway.

Walking along the towpath of the Kennet and Avon Canal near the village of Sulhamstead in West Berkshire in early autumn. Here we approach Tyle Mill Lock from the upsteam side. This canal was constructed to link two rivers, the Thames in the east and Avon in the west, enabling goods to be carried from London to Bristol. It fell into disuse due to the Great Western Railway being built but was restored in the late 1900s and is now a busy leisure waterway.

The banks of the River Nile as it flows through Egypt between Aswan and Luxor. Palm trees bask in the late afternoon sunlight. The Nile has always been the lifeblood of Egypt as it passes through the Sahara Desert. The area immediately by the riverbanks is green and fertile, but just behind are the desert sands. Flooding has now been controlled by the nearby Aswan Dam which also provides electricity to the region. The image has an oil pastel finish - developed from my original photograph.

Boats moored on the Thames riverside just above the old mill at Goring-on-Thames. Just above here the river divides with the navigation channel passing through the lock next to Goring and Streatley weir. Here though it passes under the road bridge before rushing through the sluices and through Goring Mill. But here all is calm, the moorings fronting old half timbered buildings which house amoung other things a dental surgery. It's been a hot summer resulting in a build-up of green weed.

The scene just above the old mill in Goring-on-Thames. Here the river divides, the main stream passing through the lock (just behind us) and rushing over the weir whilst this branch once turned the millwheel. Boats are frequently moored here and opposite are some recently refurbished boathouses and a row of black and white buildings which houses the dentist's surgery! Goring became famous in recent years as the home of George Michael who lived next to the Mill. Digital art from my original photo

Enjoying a drink. African Elephant, Loxodonta Africana, Serengeti National Park, Tanzania, East Africa. Elephants must have access to water and enjoy spending time washing, playing and cooling off. African Elephants are classified as endangered. They are victims of large-scale poaching and habitat loss due to rapid human expansion. Canon 500D, zoom lens. Boats waiting to be hired on the Basingstoke Canal just outside Odiham in Hampshire. This canal was opened in 1794 and was constructed to link Basingstoke with the River Thames at Weybridge (Surrey) by way of the Wey Navigation. Its purpose was mainly to transport agicultural goods as far as London. However, it was never commercially successful, ceased carrying goods in 1910 and became increasingly derelict. Restoration began in 1977 and it was reopened as far as the Greywell tunnel in 1991.

The lovely old mill at Hambleden on the River Thames in Buckinghamshire, sitting just above the exceptionally long weir. Walkers can cross the weir on a footway which leads to Hambleden Lock on the Berkshire bank. From here the Thames Path leads upstream to Henley on Thames and downstream to Marlow. The mill itself has ancient origins and was apparently mentioned in the Domesday Book! More recently it has been converted into flats.

A picturesque boathouse on the banks of the River Thames between Benson and Wallingford in Oxfordshire. Here the river banks are covered in mature trees and plenty of thick undergrowth. But here and there we get glimpses across the river of views such as this. We are standing on the Thames Path, the long distance trail which joins the Thames Barrier in London with the source of the river in the Cotswolds. To our right is the old market town of Wallingford and to our left is the lock at Benson.

A view of the old bridge over the River Wye at Chepstow in Monmouthshire, Wales. It provides a link between Monmouthshire and Gloucestershire in England. This elegant iron bridge was constructed in 1816 and was designed by John Rastrick of Bridgenorth. It had to be tall and extremely strong as the tidal range here is one of the highest in the world, at times reaching 14 metres! Hence the massive pillars on which it is constructed.

The riverside at Abingdon-on-Thames in Oxfordshire, England. The town is about six miles south of Oxford, the river from here making its way towards Wallingford and Reading. St Helen's parish church lies next to the river. Dating from the early C12th, it is notable for being the second widest church in England and having five aisles! Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200
