Whitby is a seaside town in Yorkshire, northern England.

Whitby, 199 Steps The 199 Whitby Abbey steps are one challenge visitors to the town cannot resist. They’re one of Whitby's most famous attractions. But, how much do you know about the history of Whitby steps? The first record of the Whitby Abbey steps comes from 1340, but they’re believed to be even older. The steps were originally made from wood. It was not until 1774 that the original wooden steps were replaced with stone from Sneaton.

This is from an original watercolour and is notable for the simplicity of pallet and a delicacy of touch that brings this famous scene to life. It was the view as we walked down into Whitby from Sandsend and looked up to see the iconic abbey overlooking the houses. Whitby is a seaside town, port and civil parish in the Borough of Scarborough and English county of North Yorkshire. Before local government reorganisations in the late 1960s, it was part of the North Riding of Yorkshire.

The piers of Whitby are four structures along the River Esk estuary in Whitby, North Yorkshire, England. Whilst all the piers can be accessed by the general public, the piers were not built as seaside attractions - so called pleasure piers like Redcar, Saltburn or Withernsea, moreover serving a civil purpose, such as ship loading and protecting the harbour.
