Howzit is a common greeting meaning “hello” and/or “how’s it going?” Often said at the same time as using the shaka sign, sometimes known as the "hang loose" sign, it is a friendly hand gesture often associated with surf culture. The term ‘China’ derives from Cockney rhyming slang ‘China plate’ meaning ‘mate’ and was introduced to South Africa by early British immigrants.
