In the 1810s, what would be Mexico was still New Spain, under the Spanish crown. On 16 September 1810, when Roman Catholic priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang his church bell and gave the call to arms that triggered the Mexican War of Independence. In 1815, rebel leader Vicente Guerrero uttered the phrase 'La Patria Es Primero' (The Homeland is First) in response to pleas from his father to surrender to Spain, making it the de facto motto of those fighting for their independence. The war would last over a decade until 1821 when in Declaration of Independence of the Mexican Empire would be consummated.
