Photograph of the original culture plate of the fungus Penicillium notatum, made by the Scottish bacteriologist Sir Alexander Fleming whilst working at St. Mary's Hospital, Paddington, London. Fleming was born on August 6th 1881 & died on March 11 1955. Fleming discovered in 1928 that secretions from Penicillium notatum destroyed colonies of the bacterium Staphylococcus sp.
