The Black-chinned Hummingbird is a rare sight in my backyard. Most of my hummingbird shooting, and most of the hummingbird shots you see here, are from my backyard garden. In the ten plus years I've been shooting in the yard, I've only had two instances where I've caught Black-chinned Hummingbirds. Both those instances were in the springtime, but in different years, and on one day only in each year. They show up for a moment, then move on. That may be due to the territorial Allen's Hummingbirds in the garden, chasing out most other hummingbirds, for what seems like all year. This shot, as the bird approaches a Mexican Bird Of Paradise flower, was taken in Patagonia, Arizona. What I find fascinating about Black-chinned Hummingbirds...

Bird of paradise, strelitzia exotic flower

he blue-winged leafbird (Chloropsis moluccensis) is a species of leafbird found in forest and second growth throughout Southeast Asia as far east as Borneo and as far south as southern Sumatra. The male is green-bodied with a yellow-tinged head, black face and throat. It has a blue moustachial line. The female differs in that it has a greener head and blue throat, and young birds are like the female but without the blue throat patch. It is common to fairly common throughout most of its range, and therefore considered to be of least concern by BirdLife International. (Source: Wikipedia)

Bright and colorful male is difficult to miss: bright grayish blue with yellow or orange underparts (depending on subspecies) and a small orange splotch on the back. Like other flowerpeckers, forages actively, often hovering in front of blossoms or while gleaning from foliage. The species lives in a wide range of forested and human-modified habitats and is particularly found in open habitats. Its diet is dominated by fruit, in particular figs. The plaintive cuckoo (Cacomantis merulinus) is a species of bird belonging to the genus Cacomantis in the cuckoo family Cuculidae. It is native to Asia, from India, Nepal and China to Indonesia. A small and slender cuckoo, far more often heard than seen; the male's accelerating song, which decreases in volume as it progresses, is composed of a few whistled long notes followed by shorter, breathy notes. Adult male and typical (non-hepatic) female show orange belly, gray head, and brown back and tail. Hepatic, or rufous-morph, individuals are rusty brown above and white below, with black barring all over the body. Inhabits open woodlands, edges, and agricultural areas.
