Description: Homeric Hymn 4: [Hermes] whom Maia bare, the rich-tressed Nymphe, when she was joined in love with Zeus,--a shy Goddess, for she avoided the company of the blessed Gods, and lived within a deep, shady cave. There Kronion [Zeus] used to lie with the rich-tressed Nymphe, unseen by deathless Gods and mortal men, at dead of night while sweet sleep should hold white-armed Hera fast. And when the purpose of great Zeus was fixed in heaven, she was delivered and a notable thing was come to pass. For then she bare a son, of many shifts, blandly cunning, a robber, a cattle driver, a bringer of dreams, a watcher by night, a thief at the gates, one who was soon to show forth wonderful deeds among the deathless Gods. Born with the dawning...

Description: This tremendous figure has many names - Thoth, Hermes, and Mercury to name a few. Some folks view him as a god. But he is a very real, indispensable historical figure regarding the birth of civilization on this planet. In Egypt he is mostly depicted in human form with the head of an Ibis, and sometimes as a baboon. This public domain image of an Egyptian stone carving was perfect for artistic modification in order to represent the light around him - in terms of frequency and illumination.
Description: Mercury, corresponding to Hermes in Greek mythology, was the son of Jupiter and Bona Dea. He was the god of travelers, thieves, commerce and medicine, as well as the personification of intelligence and speed. The god Mercury was in charge of carrying messages from one god to another. He was responsible for strokes of luck and sudden changes in life, but he was also the patron of thieves, rogues and cheats. As soon as he was born, he ran away from the cradle and stole 50 heifers from his brother Apollo.
Description: The fourth day of the month was sacred to Hermes, for that was his day of birth. Likewise the fourth day of the week (Wednesday) was named after him (in Greek it was called Hermes' day, in Latin Mercurius' day, and in Germanic Woden's day--the Norse god Woden-Odin being identified with Hermes-Mercurius). The seven days of the week correspond to the seven heavenly bodies (the five visible planets, the sun and the moon); but the ordering was based on mythic tradition. Homeric Hymn 4 to Hermes 20 ff (trans. Evelyn-White) (Greek epic C7th to 4th B.C.) : "On the fourth day of the month queenly Maia bare him [Hermes]."
