Description: "Slow and low, that is the tempo" is a classic phrase from the hip hop group The Beastie Boys, first used in their 1986 hit song "Slow and Low". As label partners on Def Jam with Run DMC at the time, the phrase quickly became a part of the hip hop lexicon, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a consistent beat and pace in rap music. The Beastie Boys were pioneers in the hip hop genre, blending rock and rap to create a new and innovative sound that resonated with audiences around the world. The phrase "Slow and low, that is the tempo" has since become synonymous with the group, representing their unique style and creative approach to hip hop music. Today, it remains a powerful and evocative phrase
Description: The High School of Performing Arts, usually referred to as the School of Performing Arts and informally known as "PA" was a public alternative high school established in 1947 by educator and creative thinker Franklin J. Keller, as a part of Metropolitan Vocational High School, using his staff and administrators on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Under Keller's stewardship, it offered music and theater arts programs in addition to the traditional "trade" skills. In 1948, the school occupied a disused 1894 public school building on West 46th Street in the Times Square area. The new school offered programs in music, dance, drama, and, for a time, photography.
Description: Krush Groove is a 1985 American musical comedy-drama film about a guy named Russell Walker who starts a hip hop record label called Krush Groove. Walker signs all of the hottest acts to his label, and when one of his groups has a hit and he doesn't have the cash to press records, he borrows money from a street hustler. The movie received a mixed reception, but the fact that it is a who's who of 80s hip hop with various groups and performers making appearances, some portraying themselves, and some as fictional characters, has made it a popular time capsule.
Description: The simple Stuyvesant Physical Ed. Leader t-shirt that became famous overnight after appearing in the Beastie Boy's 1986 video for (You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party) video when worn by none other than Ad-Rock himself. This lead to rumors that he had attended the school, when, in fact, it was original Beasties drummer Kate Schellenbach (as Mike D would reveal in Time Magazine years later) who had attended Stuyvesant High School, more commonly known simply as Stuy.
