Whittier Cards
Description: Whittier is a city in Southeast Los Angeles (County), separated from the San Gabriel Valley to the north by the Puente Hills and sharing a border with Orange County to the southeast. As of the 2020 Census, it had a population of 87,306, making it the 21st most populous city in Los Angeles County. It’s named after John Greenleaf Whittier, a Quaker, an abolitionist, and one of the so-called fireside poets. I explored it and drew this map for California Fool's Gold. https://ericbrightwell.com/2022/01/19/california-fools-gold-exploring-whittier/

Description: Southeast Los Angeles County -- or just "Southeast Los Angeles" -- refers to a cluster of gateway cities and unincorporated suburbs located between South Los Angeles's Eastside, the San Gabriel Valley, and North Orange County. I wrote a primer of the region, for my series "California Fool's Gold," in 2009 and drew an earlier version of the map at that time. This one was completed a short time after. https://ericbrightwell.com/2009/04/28/california-fools-gold-a-southeast-los-angeles-primer/

Description: A lot of folks know Carl's Speed Shop as a Daytona Beach motorcycle go fast landmark, but up until 1996, Carl called Whittier, California home. They say that location is everything, and this was especially true as Carl's namesake founder spent a lot of time making American iron faster and more powerful and when he wasn't turning wrenches, he was at the SoCal drag strips or out on the salt flats twisting the throttle and setting speed records.
Description: Carl's Speed Shop is a legendary name in high-performance motorcycle tuning, known today as a go-fast landmark in Daytona Beach, Florida. But long before it became a destination for speed enthusiasts on the East Coast, Carl's Speed Shop had its roots in Whittier, California, where it operated until 1996. Founded by Carl Morrow, a pioneer in motorcycle performance and drag racing, the shop built its reputation on making American iron faster, louder, and more powerful. In Southern California's hotbed of car culture, Carl spent decades tuning engines, crafting performance parts, and pushing the limits of speed.
