Longyerbyen lies 650 miles from the North Pole in Svalbard. It was established as a mining community in 1906 by John Longyear and totally destroyed in WWII by the German Navy. It now has a population of just over 1,000 and relies mainly on scientific research and tourism although some mining and fishing are carried out. Only a small part of the population are long term residents with the average stay in the town being just over 6 years. Picture taken on 8th June 2023 in Longyearbyen town.

Colourful tiny houses in a French village, Europe

Even on a grey and overcast day above the Arctic circle, the town of Tromso still seems a bright and cheerful place due to the different coloured houses in the town. Historically, buildings were painted to denote their use - red for churches, yellow for schools etc. Although that system no longer applies it has encouraged Norwegian homeowners to continue the tradition and cheering up their local neighbourhood. What colour would your house be ?

Who cannot fall in love with Tobermory? The cheer of painted houses set the tone. The romance of the islands beckons, scented with pine, moss, and heather. The promise of pots of strong tea and buttery scones, of sweaty walks in the rain, of dark mountains and romantic waterfalls. The small town feels like a gateway, a Scottish icon too. The work is full of colour and makes a lovely souvenir of Scotland, a great gift, a great addition to any collection.

Brightly coloured houses in amongst the rocks in the Battery area of Saint John's in Newfoundland, Canada. The whole town is full of colourful houses and one reason, suggested by a local, was that because people of St. John's enjoy having a good time in the evenings, they needed some way, when making their way home, of telling which of the houses was theirs!! I explore Bristol. From the river, on a solitary walk, a row of colorful houses catches my eye. There is something playful, childlike about them. The tones are bright, filled with light and hope, striking. The air is crisp, scents of brine and elderflower, and the sun warms me. The canvas is filled colour and energy, and it makes a wonderful gift or addition to a collection.

Long fascinated by Montreal, I decided to paint this scene of summer, joy and colour, depicting the iconic and much loved rows of brightly painted quirky houses that are a symbol of the city; I first came here as a child, enthralled and at the beginning of life’s journey. I wanted to recreate the scene, with its intense light and vivid hues. The work is filled with detail, brightness and summer heat. A perfect gift, a wonderful addition to any collection.

I was lucky enough to end up in this cute village with these very colourful painted houses, a couple of days after the celebration of Saint David's Day, the patron saint of Wales. The village was still covered in festoons and beautiful welsh flags!

Colourful Windows In Tangier, Morocco

The quayside and houses at Tobermory, capital of the Isle of Mull in Scotland's Inner Hebrides, This colourful and picturesque town is on the east coast of Mishnish, the most northerly part of the island close to the entrance to the Sound of Mull. It began life as a fishing port in 1788 and was apparently based on designs by the noted engineer Thomas Telford. The quayside is busy with fishing and leisure boats and is also home to the Tobermory Distillery.

Iconic mechants' houses in Gamla stan (The Old Town), Gamla Stan is the old town of Stockholm, Sweden which consists primarily of the island Stadsholmen. The town dates back to the 13th century, and consists of medieval alleyways, cobbled streets, and archaic architecture. North German architecture has had a strong influence in the Old Town's construction. Stortorget is the name of the scenic large square in the centre of Gamla Stan, which is surrounded by old merchants' houses. Canon 6D, zoom lens. (Featured on Travel Connections.)

San Francisco, Colourful Houses

I found a room, a lovely room, and in that room I found beautiful vintage things. Those things moved me, they were important to me, the source of precious memories; they connected me to a time that exists no more. An old radio, solid, wooden and bakelite. Memories of ghostly voices that travelled across seas in the darkness, and an old knitted throw that covers a comfortable chair. And patches of bright colour, symbols of a new world now grown old in turn. The room is still here though, for things never totally vanish, not if we don’t let them. This work is rich in colour and detail. It is vibrant and it is unusual too. A perfect addition to any collection, a fantastic gift.
