Many American Bats are ill. The disease is caused by a fungus. It´s the White Nose Syndrome (WNS) due to the white dust that leaves the fungus in the noses of infected bats. The fungus causes unbearable itching and causes bats to wake from their hibernation, dying of cold or hunger. The disease was discovered in Albany (New York) but is spread across 16 states in the Northeast and South the United States, as well as in 4 Canadian provinces. Some species such as myotis brown (Myotis lucifugus) are in serious danger of extinction by this fungus. Bats are great allies of our society & Economy.
