As one of the lesser-known Nordic symbols, the Web of Wyrd is a symbol in Norse mythology that represents the interconnectedness of past, present and future. According to the myth, the Web of Wyrd was woven by the Norns/Nornir, the Shapers of Destiny in Norse mythology.

The ancient Irish writing of ogham reads “tip of the spear” on the spear shaft. The runes around the image read “all our hopes and dreams travel with you” because, as stated above, your existence represents the summation, the grand total of all the lives and actions before you.

Thor's Hammer

The imagery of this design comes from an archaeological find of Mjolnir. Mjolnir-- or Mjölnir-- is the hammer of the god Thor in Norse mythology. Thor was a very popular god and hundreds of hammers representing Mjolnir have been discovered. I based my digital block print on one such find in Skane.

According to the myth, Odin used his wit to convince the giantess Gunnlöð and bargained with her to have a sip of the mead for three days. Allowed only one sip per day, he used a whole horn for each time thus managing to drink all of the Mead of Poetry which helped him escape by turning into an eagle. Today, apart from identifying oneself as Norse, the Triple Horn of Odin is used as a symbol of wisdom and inspiration, poetic inspiration in particular.

The oldest form of the runic alphabets, the Elder Futhark. I thought it appropriate to represent it in twigs and sticks, in mandala form.

This runic inscription is of the Elder Futhark, the oldest form of rune alphabet. I've based my version off of the Kylver Stone which is from around 400 CE and is the oldest known written sequence of the Elder Futhark. Some of the runes are a little different from what is commonly seen elsewhere. Perhaps this is a personal "handwriting" style, the runes hadn't been formalized in style, or even a mistake? The final symbol-- the tree-like one-- is not part of the Elder Futhark but thought to perhaps be a bindrune. For my version I have written each rune by hand with ink and a calligraphy brush then scanned it to make it truly unique!

Gungnir is the name of the mighty spear that belongs to the god Odin. As you’d expect for the weapon of a god, Gungnir is no ordinary spear. It was created by the dwarves, the most skilled smiths in the cosmos, as is related in the tale of how the gods’ greatest treasures were made. Gungnir is said to have runes carved on its point, which presumably increase its aim and deadliness through magic. In the war between the two tribes of gods, Odin led the Aesir gods into battle against the Vanir. He began the battle by hurling his spear over the enemy host and crying, “Óðinn á yðr alla!” (“Odin owns all of you!”).

Huginn and Muninn are a pair of ravens that served Odin the Allfather as his messengers. In several artworks, the two ravens were depicted right next to Odin or sitting on his shoulders. Huginn and Muninn flew around the world during the day and returned to Odin in the evening to tell him all they saw. It was believed that, thanks to the abilities given to them by Odin, Huginn and Muninn were keen observers and could travel all of Midgard (the world) in a day, speak and understand the language of humans.

Derived from the Greek word "Triskeles" meaning "three legs", the Triskele or Triple Spiral is a complex ancient Celtic symbol. Often referred to by many as a Triskelion, its earliest creation dates back to the Neolithic era, as it can be seen at the entrance of Newgrange, Ireland. The Triskele gained popularity in its use within the Celtic culture from 500BC onwards. This archaic symbol is one of the most convoluted to decipher as symbolists believe it is reflective of many areas of culture from the time. Some of these connotations include: life-death-rebirth, spirit-mind-body, mother-father-child, past-present-future, power-intellect-love and creation-preservation-destruction to name but a few.

The unicursal hexagram is so-called because it can be drawn unicursally- that is, in one continuous movement. This is significant when forming figures in ritual magick, where a continuous line is preferred to an interrupted movement. It is classified as the third form of the hexangle and is called the "pseudo-hexagram" or "irregular third form." Its description is: "Denotes the presidency of the Sun and Moon over the Four Elements, united in, and proceeding from, the Spirit."

The Spiral Goddess, often used by Wiccans, is used as a sign of life. The spiral represents the ever continuing cycle of life, death, and rebirth. The spiraling line can be seen as the constant path of life and has been found throughout history as far back as Paleolithic times, where they were carved on tombs. Spirals can also be found in many instances in nature, for example, galaxies and seashells.

Foremost is the symbolism of the serpent biting, devouring, or eating its own tail. This symbolizes the cyclic Nature of the Universe: creation out of destruction, Life out of Death. The ouroboros eats its own tail to sustain its life, in an eternal cycle of renewal. It is sometimes depicted in a lemniscate shape (eight figure) as well. In mythology, the Oroboros is a symbol representing the Milky Way galaxy.

The setogram is also known as the faery or elven star. It is used within some faerie traditions but is also associated with many other magical traditions. Seven is a sacred number in many pagan traditions, and this star symbol can be used to represent different sets of seven things depending on a person's beliefs or tradition. The number three is commonly considered to relate to heaven and the higher realms while the number four relates to the earth. 3 + 4 = 7 which can be seen as heaven and earth coming together as a whole.

A Connection to Everything: The Tree of Life commonly represents the interconnectedness of everything in the universe. It symbolizes togetherness and serves as a reminder that you are never alone or isolated, but rather that you are connected to the world. The roots of the Tree of Life dig deep and spread into the earth, thereby accepting nourishment from Mother Earth, and its branches reach up into the sky, accepting energy from the sun and moon.
