A spiritual kitsune that has a mischievous side

Nine Flames is a design inspired by a mythical fox of Japan. The more tails these foxes have, the older, wiser, and more powerful they are. Nine is often depicted as the greatest number of tails one may possess. Though traditionally a nine-tailed fox’s fur is said to turn white or gold, I chose to use fiery colors to tie it to that element and to evoke the likening of a red fox to flame.

Kitsune is the Japanese name for the red fox and the ice fox. In mythology, they are attributed a special power that increases with the number of tails (maximum 9). This drawing of Yokai figure Kitsune is perfectly suitable for friends of Japanese culture and lovers of mythical creatures.

I was always fascinated by this particular Japanese yokai, the kitsune. Thunder kitsune has always been my favorite as an idea and even if I didn’t follow the tradition I think I made her justice with this piece.

Inspired by japanese mythology and art, this design depicts a kitsune, fox spirit. According to japanese folklore all foxes are supernatural beings – after reaching a certain age, they can shapeshift into human form in order to help or decieve men. With age they grow additional tails – in some tales after they are gaining their ninth tail, they turn into a tenko, a celestial fox and they ascend to the heavens.

A mythical fox in Japanese folklore with intelligence and magical abilities. Kitsune are often depicted as shape-shifters and possessors of profound wisdom.

The kitsune is a fox who gets powers as soon as he reaches the age of 100, like creating illusions or knowing everything. Each century he passes, a tail pushes him to reach the millennium and the fullness of his powers. He likes to turn into a woman so as not to arouse suspicion.
