Having seen the magnificent Notre Dame Cathedral lit up at night on the way from the airport to my apartment on Rue Dauphine, it became my first choice of photographic subjects in Paris. It was my first 'wow' moment in a fantastic trip & looked just as good in daylight with spring blossoms to enhance the view. Photographed with a Canon 400D in Paris, France. HDR image tonemapped in Photomatix. I took a total of 1770 photos during a 9 day whirlwind trip to Paris & London. A Tribute to Paris' Music Scene

One of the things you can see in front of Notre Dame Cathedral is the bronze equestrian statue - Charlemagne et ses Leudes (Charlemagne and his guards), which was created by brothers Louis and Charles Rochet in 1878. This bronze statue of Charlemagne shows the King of the Franks on horseback. He is holding a lance or staff while being guided by two leudes, which are believed to be the figures of Oliver and Roland. Charlemagne holds an important place in European history, being the first Emperor of Western Europe around 800AD, known at that time as the Carolingian Empire. The Statue of Charlemagne is one of several interesting things to see around Notre Dame and is well worth a few minutes of your time when visiting the attractions...

Just outside of Notre Dame Cathedral embedded in the concrete of the public square is a small geographic marker from which the distance from Paris to all other places are judged. Paris Point Zero marks the supposedly exact center of the city or country, and all other locations are thought to be measured as a distance radiating from this point. It is marked by an octagonal brass plate that is set into the concrete of the square. With the marker's very low profile, and the millions of people congregating in the square everyday, some tourists (like myself) have a hard time even finding it.
