The Z-Rod and Double Disc is a mysterious symbol carved into many standing stones by the Pictish People of Scotland in the 8th century. Primordial and powerful, it invokes a time long gone. Drawing created by the internationally esteemed tattoo artist Pat Fish.

Pictish crescent V Rod design inspired by the carvings found on Pictish stones in Scotland

This design is based off the enigmatic symbols of the Picts -- a Celtic-speaking people who lived in Scotland. This symbol is commonly referred to as the crescent and v-rod, although the exact meaning behind the symbol is not completely known.

Carved into ancient stone are these designs by the now gone Picts of pre-Christian Scotland. This is a V-Rod Crescent design here in black.

The original sculpture of this charming mermaid is on The Maid of Meigle Pictish Stone, carved in the 6th century, now in the Meigle Museum in Perthshire, Scotland. With a classic split tail and holding her twined hair, she is a Melusine, spirit of the sea. The image is a photograph of an actual tattoo by Celtic tattoo artist Pat Fish.

This symbol comes from the Pict people, a group of people who inhabited areas of what is now Scotland. They are known for their stone carvings, although the meaning behind most of their symbols has now been lost. This symbol is commonly called the "double disk and z-rod" and I have recreated it in my own style.

A design from the 8th century Pictish standing stones in Scotland, the boar was considered the ultimate adversary in the Hunt. Wily and strong, they were a match for anyone pursuing them, and stand as a representative of animal energy. Drawn by the internationally esteemed tattoo artist Pat Fish.

A bold 6th c Pictish snake and z-rod taken from the Brandsbutt stone found in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

This design is based on part of a Pictish standing stone in Aberlemno Scotland. It depicts two animals that could be identified as either kelpies (a mythical Scottish shape-shifting figure often appearing as a horse) or seahorses. I leave the interpretation up to you!

This Pictish warrior is not historically accurate, since I’ve technically mixed elements from various Viking and Celtic peoples and eras. My mythology is suspect and my history is half-remembered, but my art will never let me down.
