The government ratified the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1920, banning all intoxicating liquors, including beer, beginning the period of American history we now know as Prohibition. However, in 1933, Prohibition came to an end. The date was April 7, so now we celebrate New Beer’s Eve each year on April 6! So grab a beer and toast to your ability to drink it!

Elizebeth Friedman (nee Smith, 1892-1980), US cryptologist. Born Elizebeth Smith, she married fellow US cryptologist William Friedman in 1917, having met him at Riverbank Laboratories near Chicago, where they both worked on codes and ciphers. She moved with her husband to Washington DC and worked on cracking the codes of smugglers and drug and alcohol runners during the Prohibition era. She and her husband also published 'The Shakespearean Ciphers Examined' (1957). To commemorate the Friedmans, the National Security Agency's OPS1 building was dedicated as the William and Elizebeth Friedman Building in 2002.

The Peoria Distillers were a minor league baseball team that existed on-and-off from 1894 to 1917. They played in the Western Association from 1894 to 1896; the Central League in 1900, 1904 and 1917; the Western League from 1902 to 1903; and the Three-I League from 1905 to 1917. As far as Albany goes, we do know that Prussian-born Frederick Hinckel and Bavarian-born John Hedrick both opened breweries in Albany in 1852, the earliest Central European immigrant-owned breweries in the city. What we don't know is if those breweries opened as ale breweries or lager breweries. They may have been brewing Bavarian-style Weiss Bier. As the 1850s wore on, circumstantial references to lager brewing in Albany appears, but nothing noting a named brewery. In 1857, Templeton's—a furniture store on Albany's main drag, Broadway, advertised refrigerators for sale. Suitable for, as the ad expresses, "Grocers, Butchers, and Lager Beer purposes."

This is a really obscure breweriana design hailing from Brazil, Indiana which was and to out knowledge still is the only brewery to every operate in Brazil. Brazil Brewing Ice and Power Co. opened in 1901 and closed in 1907 it was open for 6 years. As a Pre-Prohibition Brewery, any advertising items or collectibles are likely to be desirable to collectors as they tend to be hard to find. Brazil Brewing Ice and Power Co. was the only brewery that was located in Brazil, IN at West Main St. at the city limits. This design is based on a curvy sign shape in promotion of Brazil Beer. The center depicts a distinguished gentleman with a sword surrounded by the taxt 'Brazil Brewing Company - Brazil, Indiana.

The Order of Ancient Celts is a fraternal organization in Atlantic City, New Jersey for Irish Americans. The membership includes powerful figures in local and state politics. The Order marks St. Patrick's Day (March 17) with a raucous dinner. Members wear a sash in the colors of the Irish flag at official functions. In 1919 the dinner featured an address by the Attorney General. In 1920 the dinner is brought to an early close when it is raided by prohibition agents. ("Nights in Ballygran")
