Thomas Clark Durant (February 6, 1820 – October 5, 1885) was an American physician, businessman, and financier. He was vice-president of the Union Pacific Railroad (UP) in 1869 when it met with the Central Pacific railroad at Promontory Summit in Utah Territory. He created the financial structure that led to the Crédit Mobilier scandal. He was interested in hotels in the Adirondacks and once owned the yacht Idler. He successfully built railroads in the Midwest, and, after an 1862 act of Congress created the Union Pacific Railroad, John A. Dix was elected president and Durant vice president of the company. Durant assumed the burden of management and money raising—and, with much money at his disposal, he helped secure the 1864 passage of

It was named for the commonwealth in which it was established. By 1882, Pennsylvania Railroad had become the largest railroad (by traffic and revenue), the largest transportation enterprise, and the largest corporation in the world. Its budget was second only to the U.S. government.

A4 Pacific Class - Union of South Africa, October 2018 The streamlined shape of the A4 Pacific class of locomotives set them apart from the rest in 1930s passenger rail travel in Great Britain. Designed by Sir Nigel Gresley for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER), 35 of the locomotives were built between 1935 and 1938 at the LNER's Doncaster locomotive works. The most famous A4 of them all was of course the Mallard, which to this day holds the world record as the fastest steam locomotive of all time, reaching a speed of 126 miles per hour on the 3rd of July 1938. So, it was a great privilege to travel on a train hauled by this A4, the Union of South Africa. The locomotive was originally named 'Osprey' and had the LNER number 4488. ...

Having tired of driving the I76 across Nebraska and Colorado, we had opted to take the I76 Alternate after North Platte. The day was heavily overcast, it did rain later, but our travels became so much more interesting. This is an image of an old silo in Merino, Colorado. It was clear that the building had seen better days, but the soft, flat lighting gave the old building such interest against the turbulent sky.
