Hello Kakapo

How amazing is this?! I'd hoped for auroras to appear during our time in Tekapo, since it's known as having one of the darkest skies in the world. We were lucky enough to have it two nights running (although we could only see it with the naked eye on one of those nights). I should have known the minute I got to the Church of the Good Shepherd that they could be seen with the camera, since there was a horde of photographers all facing south, which is probably not a normal occurrence at 11pm!

All I can think of when I see this photo is how cold my feet were when I took it! I decided not to inundate my boots, so instead waded into the glacial Matukituki River barefoot. The pins and needles had me dancing on the bank for minutes afterward!

Lupins are absolutely everywhere in Mackenzie Country in December, and I can't say I mind too much. I just had to make sure I picked and chose my spots so I wasn't constantly taking flower photos! This shot was captured on the hillside of Mount John just down from the observatory.
