Sometimes confused with 3D printing, additive manufacture is used to form high strength metal components by using a high energy computer guided laser to sinter together metal powders made up of tiny beads. These beads are on an unfinished surface, which would typically be precision machined to a smooth surface once the initial component is created layer by layer. Image width is 155 microns.

The macrophage, when activated, will engulf (phagocytose) the bacteria and destroy them as part of the body's immune response. M. tuberculosis causes the disease tuberculosis. It infects the lungs creating primary tubercles, nodular lesions of dead tissue and bacteria. The bacteria may enter the blood or lymph systems and spread to other organs of the body. Tuberculosis is spread by coughs and sneezes.

Stem cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of a clump of human embryonic stem cells (HESCs), showing surface detail. HESCs are pluripotent, which means that they are able to differentiate into any of the 200 cell types in the human body. The type of cell they mature into depends upon the biochemical signals they receive, though the cells seen here have not been exposed to growth factors. HESCs are being studied as a way to repair damaged tissue in diseases such as diabetes and Parkinson's. These cells were grown in 2005 at the Centre for Life, Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK. The cytotoxic (cell-killing) T cells are part of a natural immune response. Research being carried out in the field of nanomedicine is creating personalized cancer vaccines by loading neoantigens from a patient's tumour into nanoparticles. These nanoparticles are then used to activate the patient's own immune system, triggering the actions of T cells as seen here.

At above centre is the nucleus (large oval) containing genetic material in the form of DNA. Surrounding the nucleus is cell cytoplasm filled with endoplasmic reticulum. The endo- plasmic reticulum (ER) is a complex system of membranes which form a network of flattened cisternae (cavities). These function as reservoirs and channels for the storage and transport of substances through the cytoplasm. The tangle (yellow) lies in the cytoplasm (green) of the cell, and consists of abnormal aggregates of the protein tau. In the healthy cell, tau stabilises microtubules in the cytoplasm. It is not known precisely how the tangles are formed, nor their impact on the neuron's function, but they are seen in a range of neural disorders including Alzheimer's disease, Creutzfeld-Jakob disease (CJD), some forms of Parkinson's disease, and Supranuclear Palsy.

Many species of Staphylococcus cause disease in man through secretion of exotoxins: S. aureus is commonly present on skin and mucous membranes and causes boils and internal abscesses, and is the commonest cause of pyogenic (pus-forming) infections in man. Other species produce toxins causing food poisoning. The bony capsule that encloses the organ has been removed to reveal the organ's spiral structure. Rows of sensory hairs within the organ of Corti convert sound vibrations into nerve impulses that are sent along the auditory nerve to the brain. Different sound frequencies stimulate hairs in different positions along the spiral. Low frequencies stimulate those near the top of the spiral and high frequencies stimulate those near the bottom.

The resulting hard, round stones (calculi) may cause severe pain, especially as they pass down the urinary tract. Large stones may need to be surgically removed or broken down using ultrasound therapy.

The muscle fibrils, or myofibrils, are crossed by transverse tubules (dark blue lines). These tubules mark the division of the myofibrils into contractile units (sarcomeres). Cardiac muscle is under subconscious control and continuously contracts to pump blood around the body without tiring. Magnification: 3200x when printed 10 centimetres across.

Mitochondrion, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). Mitochondria are a type of organelle found in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells. They oxidise sugars and fats to produce energy in a process called respiration. A mitochondrion has two membranes, a smooth outer membrane and a folded inner membrane. The folds of the inner membrane are called cristae, and it is here that the chemical reactions to produce energy take place. Magnification: x62,800 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.

Influenzavirus B. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of particles of the influenza B virus, which is the cause of influenza (flu) in humans. The virus particles have an enveloped outer coat, or capsid, bearing the proteins (green) haemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N), which allow the virus to enter and leave host cells. As with all viruses, influenza cannot reproduce by itself, instead entering cells and hijacking their biochemical machinery to produce more copies of the virus. Flu usually causes lethargy, aching muscles, fever and nausea. Influenza B, however, is less virulent than influenza A, due to the limited host range and its slower rate of evolution (by 2 to 3 times).

Streptococcus pyogenes. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of the bacteria Streptococcus pyogenes, forming an S-shaped chain. S.pyogenes is a spherical, Gram-positive bacteria that typically forms chains. Healthy humans may carry this bacterium in their throat or nose. Pathogenic strains of S.pyogenes cause infections of the skin (including impetigo); uterus following childbirth (puerperal sepsis); bloodstream (septi- caemia); and scarlet fever. S.pyogenes accounts for much of the high incidence of sore throats and tonsillitis in young children. The use of penicillin drugs are effective as a treatment. Magnification: x7,000 at 6x4.5cm size.

Caffeine crystals. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of anhydrous caffeine crystals (1,3,7-trimethylxanthine). They were produced by a process called sublimation. A liquid containing caffine, such as coffee, is frozen and heated to 238 degrees Celsius, causing the frozen liquid to vaporise without going through the liquid phase. The vapour is then condensed, which drives the water out and results in anhydrous crystals. Some of the crystals have symmetrically intergrown (upper centre, red and yellow). Caffine stimulates the central nervous system (CNS), increasing alertness and deferring fatigue. It occurs in coffee beans and tea leaves. Magnification: x400 at 10 centimetres high.
