The first airline was the German airship company DELAG, founded on 16 November 1909. The four oldest non-airship airlines that still exist are the Netherlands' KLM (1919), Colombia's Avianca (1919), Australia's Qantas (1921) and the Czech Republic's Czech Airlines (1923).

Fan blades have been growing as jet engines have been getting bigger: each fan blade carries the equivalent of nine double-decker buses and swallows the volume of a squash court every second. Advances in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling have permitted complex, 3D curved shapes with very wide chord, keeping the fan capabilities while minimizing the blade count to lower costs. Coincidentally, the bypass ratio grew to achieve higher propulsive efficiency and the fan diameter increased.

A wing is a type of fin that produces lift, while moving through air or some other fluid. As such, wings have streamlined cross-sections that are subject to aerodynamic forces and act as airfoils. A wing's aerodynamic efficiency is expressed as its lift-to-drag ratio. The lift a wing generates at a given speed and angle of attack can be one to two orders of magnitude greater than the total drag on the wing. A high lift-to-drag ratio requires a significantly smaller thrust to propel the wings through the air at sufficient lift.

Image of three Spitfires of 222 Squadron with an added background of a Harris Hawk. The Spitfire image is the same one replicated twice from the original. I then researched 222 squadron and found two more aircraft registrations, which I then changed on the two replicated planes. I added the Harris Hawk image which is a picture of a Harris Hawk on the glove in a zoo against a sunset sky of my own. I also cloned out the glove. The images were all blended together in CS3 using layers and with some help from Nik Color Efex filters. A total of five images were used to create this image.

I believe this is not unlike a photo I posted quite a while ago, but I hope that this is an improved version. Sometimes when I see these planes, I think about Willy Wonka's elevator and where I'd be able to go in that thing. Imagine experiencing air travel without TSA screaming at you to empty your pockets.

Impressions of Dungeness This image was made using five of my own photos put together in CS3. Inspired by a story my dad told me about watching Spitfires and Hurricanes turn back Doodlebugs out at sea as he stood on the beach at Dungeness. For the full story click HERE
