Oil painting, canvas on a stretcher. Varnished. Early morning hours. Singing birds, aroma of forest flowers, transparent gentle air.

One December morning I went for a walk through the New Forest National Park (Hampshire, UK), heading North from Brockenhurst to Lyndhurst. It was a cold morning but the sun had removed the frost from everywhere but this glade, where a little mist and the tree blocking the direct sun got me this view. Painting in oil, the layers of mist and sunburst proved and interesting challenge. Painting measures 20x16 inches.

A cold winters day hike through the snow towards Fox Creek in Rainier, Oregon reveals a pale blue winter sky seen through a stand of trees near the edge of a forest glade on the bottom of a sloping hill. Still attached to twigs and brambles autumn leaves appear golden in the sun like trail markers bordering a snowy path zig zagging across the hills an into the distance.

I spotted this beautiful bush with red berries, by a creek, while walking in one of the vast forests in Stuttgart area, Germany. A sunlit glade was opening behind it and so I decided to make a quick study which I finished later in my studio, with oil paints.

I use Winsor and Newton professional acrylics and glazes and the painting has a high gloss, deep lustrous surface. This narrative painting is partly allegorical, mainly autobiographical and is Inspired by an incident walking the dog in Bishopstoke woods, Hampshire, when an 80 year old Spitfire aircraft thunders overhead powered by its Merlin engines and soon after there is a brief hailstorm. Two cyclists dressed in tweeds on bespoke bicycles freewheel past a row of artificial trees, whilst a dog runs, stops and stares.
