Description: Steeped in surfing legend and local lore alike, the waves at Bells Beach are a big, wide canvas that's not very steep. It's tough to ride which largely keeps the kooks away, and forces surfers to bring their rail game. In 1961, locals launched the Bells Beach Surf Classic to bring together the best of the best. It didn't take long before surfers were coming from all over the world to compete and in 1973, the event became a pro competition which, despite several name changes, has been held annually ever since.
Description: The Wedge is located at the intersection of the beach and the man-made jetty that forms the breakwater on the western side of Newport harbor entrance. When a south or south/southwest swell is running in the right size and direction, the Wedge can produce waves up to 30 feet (9.1 m) high.
