Datasette Hats
Description: Long before floppy disk drives became common, many Commodore 64 owners loaded their favorite games from inexpensive cassette tapes known as datasettes. Connected through Commodore's proprietary Datasette drive, these cassettes stored programs as audio data, making them an affordable way to build a software library despite notoriously long loading times that could stretch several minutes. Throughout the 1980s, countless budget labels released games on cassette, especially across Europe, where the format remained hugely popular. While waiting for a game to load tested players' patience, the Datasette made the C64 accessible to millions of families and helped establish one of the largest and most beloved game libraries in home computing.
