From 1985 to 1990, the team was known as the Jacksonville Expos during an affiliation with the Montreal Expos, but they returned to the Suns moniker in 1991. The club rebranded as the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp before the 2017 season.

It is also the first ever incarnation of the club's new name. Previously, they were known as the Washington Darts. This year, the team finished in fourth place in the Southern Division. They did not make the North American Soccer League playoffs.
