Description: “Your laundry will be as white as snow. Kesem” (Hebrew.) 1938 advertising poster for Kesem Washing Powder, produced by the Shemen Edible Oil Factory, Haifa, Israel. A. L. Monsohn Lithographic Press, Jerusalem. Designed by Franz Krausz. Public domain. Franz Krausz (1905-1998) was one of Israel’s most accomplished poster artists. Austrian-born, he made Aliyah to Tel Aviv in 1934. He created hand-painted gouache posters characterized by vivid colors and bold typography. Franz Krausz’ wife, Annie, was the model for the poster. Using a variety of graphic design tools, I created a restored and enlarged reproduction of this historical Israeli poster, based on a rare photo of the original poster in an archive.

Playful surrealism meets mid-century novelty advertising style art. The tone is humorous, confident, slightly kitsch. The artist used warm desert tones and bold typography for a slightly posterized look with clean outlines and minimal texture. The poster depicts a cactus shaving, symbolizing the new native-born Israeli (sabra/tzabar). In Hebrew, “tzabar” refers to both the prickly pear cactus and a native-born Israeli. Using a variety of graphic design tools, I created a restored and enlarged reproduction of this historical Israeli poster, based on a rare photo of the original poster in an archive.
