Description: HMS Belfast moored as a museum ship on the River Thames in London. This Town-class light cruiser was built for the Royal Navy by Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast and launched in 1938 on St Patrick's day. She served in the Second World War and the Korean War before entering reserve in 1963.
Description: World War 2 - HMS Ark Royal was an aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy that was operated during the Second World War. Designed in 1934 to fit the restrictions of the Washington Naval Treaty, Ark Royal was built by Cammell Laird at Birkenhead, England, and completed in November 1938.
Description: Royal Navy - Sometime in the 19th century, the Royal Navy attempted to finally dispel the old superstition among sailors that beginning a voyage on a Friday was certain to bring bad luck. To demonstrate the falseness of this belief, they decided to commission a ship named HMS Friday. Her keel was laid on a Friday, she was launched on a Friday, and she set sail on her maiden voyage on Friday the 13th, under the command of a Captain James Friday. She was never seen or heard from again. Or so the story goes, it is believed to be an urban legend within the Royal Navy.
Description: World War 2 - HMS Illustrious was the lead ship of her class of aircraft carriers built for the Royal Navy before World War II. Her first assignment after completion and working up was with the Mediterranean Fleet, in which her aircraft's most notable achievement was sinking one Italian battleship and badly damaging two others during the Battle of Taranto in late 1940. The carrier participated in the early stages of the Battle of Okinawa until mechanical defects arising from accumulated battle damage became so severe she was ordered home early for repairs in May 1945.
Description: A lovely colour photo of the Royal Navy's aircraft carrier HMS Hermes in the 1960s. This photo of the bow of the ship was taken whilst the carrier was docked. This is one of many photo's that were taken by my father whilst he served on HMS Hermes in the 1960s.

Description: World War 2 - HMS Hood was a battle cruiser of the Royal Navy. In May 1941, Hood and the battleship Prince of Wales were ordered to intercept the German battleship Bismarck and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen, which were en route to the Atlantic, where they were to attack convoys. On 24 May 1941, early in the Battle of the Denmark Strait, Hood was struck by several German shells, exploded, and sank with the loss of all but 3 of her crew of 1,418.

HMS Resolution was a sloop of the Royal Navy, a converted merchant collier purchased by the Navy and adapted, in which Captain James Cook made his second and third voyages of exploration in the Pacific. She impressed him enough that he called her "the ship of my choice", and "the fittest for service of any I have seen".
