Description: Pancrase Hybrid Wrestling, founded in 1993 by Japanese professional wrestlers Masakatsu Funaki and Minoru Suzuki, served as a vital pioneer of modern mixed martial arts (MMA). Rejecting the predetermined outcomes of traditional pro-wrestling, Pancrase promoted legitimate, full-contact combat under a unique "hybrid" rule set that prohibited closed-fist strikes to the head but allowed open-palm slaps, soccer kicks, and devastating submission holds. Fighters competed in boots and shin guards without gloves, and the inclusion of a "rope escape" system—which allowed a submission to be broken at the cost of a point—blended catch wrestling traditions with realistic combat.
