Description: What is now known as "STP" was invented by German scientists during WWII as a response to Germany's need for lubrication of the German war-machine vehicles. WWII US Army divisions in Africa that overtook German Afrika Korps vehicles alleged that the Germans employed an engine oil that is now known as STP formulation full-strength in their air-cooled 4-cylinder engines, which successfully traveled through the hot African Desert war-front without seizing due to friction and extreme heat. How the Germans' original chemical synthesis formulation found its way to the U.S. after WWII is not known, but most likely it made that journey along with many of the other German innovations through the distribution of technology through the spoils of war.

Description: By the early ’60s, Bill Jenkins had developed something of a cult following among East Coast racers, who knew that a Jenkins Competition engine significantly increased one’s odds of winning races and when he wasn’t building race-winning engines, he was winning races driving his own cars, further cementing his name in the drag racing history books. Accepting that he gained greater satisfaction as a builder than as a driver, Jenkins hung up his race suit in 1976 to focus on research and development, though remained a team owner through the 1983 season before shifting his attention to his Jenkins Competition business full-time, where he and his crew built engines for motorsports of all kinds. Description: Drag racing was a far different motorsport back in 1967, when construction concluded on the original quarter-mile. "Supertrack,"a ground up drag strip project funded by a hard-to-believe budget of over $1,000,000. In 1967, drag racing was still struggling to shuck its notorious public image as weekend recreation for juvenile delinquents wearing the inevitable black leather jackets and greasy jeans, but OCIR worked to change those perceptions by building a best-in-class facility that would soon play host to some of the top racing events in the country, including the PDA Championships where legendary drivers and their notorious cars brought the thunder to Orange County.
Description: Most longtime drag racing fans are familiar with the ultra-swoopy Wonder Wagon Vega that he debuted at the 1973 U.S. Nationals, and some may even remember that the sponsorship program actually began with a completely different team at the end of the 1972 season. The Wonder Wagon was one of the most popular funny cars ever fielded amongst fans, but it’s driver frequently stated that it was the most dangerous too, mainly due to the car’s aerodynamics, or lack thereof. Dangerous or not, the cars and the sponsor was something different, and these bread truck inspired wagons really resonated with race fans.
Description: This World War II era airfield was located ten miles north of Green Cove Springs off of U. S. Highway 17 opened up in 1960. Drag races were held on the northern east-west asphalt runway of the Fleming Island Naval Outer Landing Field and was named after the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt aircraft that flew out of the base. The track was back-lit by two big WWII surplus searchlights that would go from idle to full light when the cars staged. Starting was by a liberated traffic light hanging across the track, so no Chrondek type tree here. Races were first every Sunday, but later in 1961, changed to the first and third Sunday.
