Description: The International Pop Underground (IPU) Convention was held at the Capitol Theater and adjacent locations in Olympia, Washington on August 20–25, 1991. Orchestrated by K Records, the event kicked off with "Girl Night," an all-women showcase featuring early riot grrrl acts. Over the week, around 50 bands performed as the event seamlessly blended art, raw energy, collaboration, poetry readings, dance parties, and impromptu sets at houses and record stores. Far less commercial than contemporary music festivals, the IPU celebrated anti-corporate, community-driven underground culture, leaving a lasting legacy documented on a live compilation album and remembered as a high-water mark for Olympia's vibrant indie scene.
