Description: This is my watercolor study of a pileated woodpecker on a tree. It is the largest woodpecker in North America. Pileated refers to the birds prominent red crest, from the Latin pileatus meaning ‘capped”. It is believed the cartoon image of “woody woodpecker” was based on the appearance of a pileated woodpecker.
