I painted this around 2005 during the 2nd Gulf War. It is a M1A1 Abrams tank in a splatter of oil. According to the news article that I got the reference photo from it was being used by British forces in Iraq. This image bookends with [“Oil Stain 2”. In a splatter of oil is seen a Kurdish refugee, a woman holding a dead infant. I got the reference photo from a news article about the pullout of US Forces in Iraq at the end of the 1st Gulf War.] The two paintings together can be seen as tank blasting through a wall revealing the other side of war. The collateral damage, the human cost. It reflects my attitude about the war at the time. My respect to all those who sacrificed and payed the price of war and were affected by it.
