The 233rd ADA has no battle honors. It stood down from the Arkansas National Guard and was transferred to Field Artillery during the Global War on Terror.

44th ADA traces its lineage back to WWI, where it saw service with the Coast Artillery Corps in France. They returned to France in 1944 and units saw service in the Pacific as well. The 44th was in action in Korea throughout the fighting and also throughout the Vietnam War.

The 56th ADA traces kits lineage back to one of the dedicated antiaircraft units organized in the 1920s to improve the Coast Artillery Corps' ability to defend the shores of the United States. Later, the 56th had units in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam.

The Avenger Air Defense System is an American self-propelled surface-to-air missile system which provides mobile, short-range air defense protection for ground units against cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles, low-flying fixed-wing aircraft, and helicopters. The Avenger was originally developed for the United States Armed Forces and is currently used by the U.S. Army. The Avenger system is also used by the U.S. Marine Corps. Air Defense Artillery

The FIM-92 Stinger is a man-portable air-defense system (MANPADS) that operates as an infrared homing surface-to-air missile (SAM). It can be adapted to fire from a wide variety of ground vehicles and helicopters (as an air-to-air missile). Developed in the United States, it entered service in 1981 and is used by the militaries of the United States and 29 other countries. It is principally manufactured by Raytheon Missile Systems and is produced under license by EADS in Germany and by ROKETSAN in Turkey, with 70,000 missiles produced.

As of 2018, at least two battalions of the regiment are active: 1st Battalion, 44th Air Defense Artillery Regiment - 69th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas 2nd Battalion, 44th Air Defense Artillery Regiment - 108th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, Fort Campbell, Kentucky. The battalion is separated from the other units of the brigade, which are at Fort Bragg, NC.

The 6th ADA's lineage includes duty in the Philippines, WWII Europe and the Pacific and Vietnam. 6th ADA became the core of the School Brigade at Fort Bliss, responsible for training Air Defense units in everything from Vulcan to Spartan. The 6th's unit crest comes in both left and right versions.

The South Carolina National Guard's 263rd ADA has the oldest battle honors, going back to the Revolutionary War and the Artillery Company of Charles Town. The unit saw service during the Mexican War, the Civil War (it was in Confederate service at Fort Sumter), and in Italy and France during WWII. More recently, the regiment has become the core of the 263rd AAMDC and has deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.

In the early 1960s, communist military strength and firepower in Vietnam increased. As a result, PACAF began a buildup in the area with the addition of troops and better arms and equipment. In response to what has become known as the Gulf of Tonkin incident in 1964, Tactical Air Command pilots and support personnel found themselves deployed from the CONUS to PACAF bases such as Da Nang Air Base and Phan Rang AB in South Vietnam. Bases in Thailand (Takhli RTAFB, Korat RTAFB) were also used by deployed TAC fighter squadrons

During Desert Shield and Desert Storm the 2nd Battalion of the 1st Air Defense Artillery deployed with the Hawk surface-to-air missile system. Among many of the incidents that took place was The Big Jump West, the destruction of one of the HIPIRs, scud alerts, a chemical "attack" and the slow convoy north into Iraq. 2-1 ADA was also equipped with the Alpha system, a secret weapon which used passive monitoring to detect and destroy enemy aircraft.

The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 44th Coast Artillery Regiment on 1 February 1937. It was redesignated for the 54th Coast Artillery Regiment on 13 March 1941. The insignia was redesignated for the 54th Armored Field Artillery Battalion on 22 July 1954. It was redesignated for the 44th Artillery Regiment on 31 December 1958. Effective 1 September 1971, the insignia was redesignated for the 44th Air Defense Artillery Regiment.

The Air Defense Artillery branch is the branch of the United States Army that specializes in anti-aircraft weapons (such as surface to air missiles). In the U.S. Army, these groups are composed of mainly air defense systems such as the Patriot Missile System, Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), and the Avenger Air Defense system which fires the FIM-92 Stinger missile.

Scouts from 2d Brigade crossed on the afternoon of 23 February 1991 just after 1500 hours. Less than two hours later, they had penetrated several miles into Iraq and managed to capture over 200 prisoners. On 24 February, the official first day of action, the division as a whole swung into action as part of a coordinated attack by hundreds of thousands of allied troops.
