West Texas State Normal College was founded in 1910 in Canyon, Texas, a community of 1,400 just a few miles from the rim of Palo Duro Canyon. 'Normal' schools were named as such as they were focused on instructing teachers in what would be the 'norm' in classrooms. In 1923, the institution was renamed West Texas State Teachers College after the Texas State Department of Education approved the granting of a bachelor’s degree at the school. The college would go through several more name changes in the following decades, but one thing that would remain consistent is the school's unwavering commitment to educational excellence.
