The Golden Nugget was originally built in 1946, making it one of the oldest casinos in the city. The Golden Nugget Saloon, as it was known in the beginning, was the first structure in Las Vegas built intentionally as a stand-alone casino. Guy McAfee, its founder, was a kingpin in the illegal gambling scene of Los Angeles who had moved to Las Vegas after a crackdown on LA crime. He was a colorful character who managed the great American art of self-reinvention not just once, but twice – and who became a central figure in Las Vegas lore and is credited with coining the Strip with its now famous nickname.
