The site of the Thompson Neely House was originally settled by John Pidcock before 1701. The central section of this house was built in 1740. It was eventually expanded by Robert Thompson and his son-in-law William Neely around 1757. During the Revolutionary War the house was used as a hospital. One of the soldiers who convalesced here was James Monroe who was a young officer from Virginia. Monroe, was seriously injured during the First Battle of Trenton. In 1817, he became the fifth president of the United States.
