This was photographed on a sunny March afternoon. The Kennet and Avon or K&A was constructed in the first half of the 18th century to joinn London to Bristol. After falling into disuse from the end of the 19th century, it was restored in the late 1900s and is now busy with leisure boat traffic

A busy scene at Heale's Lock, no.93, on the Kennet and Avon Canal near Woolhampton in Berkshire, England. This lock was originally constructed as a turf sided lock between 1718 and 1723 under the supervision of the engineer John Hore of Newbury. It was rebuilt with brick sides in the late 1980s when the canal was undergoing complete restoration.The K&A was built between 1794 and 1810 to link the Kennet and Avon rivers, providing a smooth transport link between Bristol and London via Reading.

Approaching the bottom gate of Sulhamstead lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal in Berkshire, England. The lock was originally constructed between 1718 and 1723 under the supervision of the engineer John Hore from Newbury. The lock has a rise and fall of 1.25 metres (4ft 1inch) The Kennet and Avon was designed to link the rivers Kennet in the east and Avon in the west so that goods could be transported from Bristol to London. It was completely renovated in the late 1900s.

The K&A as it is known stretches for 87 miles between Reading and Bristol and has 105 locks. It fell into disuse with the coming of the railways but was restored in the late 1900s .

The scene would have been busy with the wide Kennet boats loading and unloading their cargoes of farm goods, coal, building stone etc. Here were also the carpenters so necessary for maintaining the locks and bridges as well as forges for shoeing the horses. A stretch of the Kennet and Avon Canal as it passes close to the village of Theale in West Berkshire, England. Taken in late autumn, these houses are on the canal bank near Sheffield Lock and the swing bridge. The canal was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to join the Thames at Reading with Bristol, following the courses of the rivers Kennet and Avon. The Great Western Railway subsequently took most of the goods transportation and the canal gradually fell into disuse before being recently restored. Nikon D7000 Nikkor 18-200

A digital pencil drawing from my original photograph of Guyers Lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal near Newbury, Berkshire. The lock was constructed between 1718 and 1723 under the supervision of local engineer John Hore. Behind the lock is Enborne Bridge, enabling the horses towing the boats to cross the canal as the towpath changed sides here. This image was captured one evening in early summer.

Sunset at Newbold Quarry, Rugby, Warwickshire, it was turned into a nature reserve when the borough council took it over in 1991. The blue lias limestone was quarried to make cement and it is around 49 feet deep. The quarry stopped production in 1910 was abandoned in 1923 due to it flooding. The water from the quarry was also used as a feed to top up the oxford canal near by.

This is very near the centre of Hungerford - a picturesque market town famed for its antique shops. This is beauyifully peaceful now but many years ago it would have been busy with boats loading and unloading their cargoes and carrying out maintenance. This canal links Bristol and Bath with Reading, the Thames and London.

Ducks are gathered here as it's a favourite place to be fed! This is very near the centre of the town - its wide, tree-lined high street famous for its antique shops. Here at the Wharf it was once a hive of industry with boats loading and unloading their cargoes. Now it's a peaceful place to sit - and feed the ducks!

Standing at County Lock near the centre of Reading, Berkshire, looking across the Kennet to the old stabe block, once belonging to Simonds Brewery which occupied this entire area. The Kennet Navigation here would have been busy with narrow boats and brewers' drays transporting barrels of beer to the local area and beyond. The Kennet Navigation and canal was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to link Bristol with the Thames and London, the brewery making full use of this highway. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200
